Exporting Max file into Substance

make sure high poly is overlapping low poly this ensure that maps are projected correctly (i.e. normals, bump maps, etc.) Exporting Export as an .FBX file Settings: Smoothing groups, Triangulate and Preserve Wedge Orientation Assigning Color IDs If you apply the Material Multi/Sub Object to your meshes, the material IDs will appear when you import into Substance Painter. 

Importing into Substance

make sure you're out of sub-object mode click and drag assigned color to multi-subobject and onto model from Slate Material Editor In Slate Material Editor:  -create a multi-subobject -create 4 shaded materials; link self-illumination to multi-subobject (red, blue, yellow and green) parameters - ambient and diffuse set to specified color and then, under self-illumination, type in "100" If you apply the Material Multi/Sub Object to your meshes, the material IDs will appear when you import into Substance Painter.
